A Black & Veatch Substation Engineer works on diverse and challenging projects from greenfield installations to retrofits. Our Substation Engineers are given the responsibility for engineering design, material, equipment, and construction specification development for medium/high voltage substation projects. The assignments are varied and will include engineering, construction support, and Engineer Procure & Construct (EPC) projects. This position offers the opportunity to lead a team at a certain level as well as learn about other engineering disciplines, develop additional areas of technical expertise of interest, and function as the primary client interface on technical and engineering issues.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Leads or completes the latest control and protective relaying design approaches on critical HV and EHV substation projects for the top domestic electric utility companies. Directs the production of engineering deliverables including relay panel arrangement drawings, single lines, three lines, AC and DC schematics, equipment wiring diagrams, relay panel wiring diagrams, equipment specifications, calculation of relay settings, and relay coordination studies AND/OR leads or completes engineering deliverables including equipment arrangement, calculations (bus, lightning protection, lighting), grounding design, EAP, and conduit plans.

Accountable for managing engineering design for multiple substation projects, including engineering schedule and budget performance, quality of engineering solutions and deliverables, and coordination of design, procurement, and construction. Orchestrates all protection and control aspects of complex substation projects and makes project engineering execution decisions.
Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members. Responsible for coordinating project schedules.
Develops strong relationships with and becomes a trusted partner with clients. Responsible for identifying key client interests and drivers on projects. Communicates client interests and drivers to project team members and develops approaches to accommodate these concerns. Works to identify future client needs and how to better position B&V to best serve those needs. Provides support to business development or pursuit activities.
Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology:
Serves as the senior level technical specialist in the area of substation control and protective relaying design. Seeks to be recognized as an industry expert and participate in professional societies by presenting papers
Provides direction to a group. Oversees performance management, career planning, recognition, learning and development.
Common responsibilities include staffing, recruiting, budgets, tools and/or processes. Resolves resource conflicts and identifies training needs.
Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 5 years related work experience All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
Experience in Control & Protection designing Substation projects and/or Physical Design of Substations and Professional Engineer License strongly preferred for candidates with 5 or more years of experience. Basic knowledge of substation high voltage physical design such as substation arrangement, electrical clearances, rigid bus design, raceway, lightning protection, grounding analysis/design, and similar areas. EIT/FE strongly preferred.
