Job Summary

The position will lead project development and execution efforts for Diode’s Hydrogen initiative. The Hydrogen initiative is focused on origination and development of a pipeline of clean energy projects that are designed to produce green hydrogen, ammonia, fuels, and feedstocks to replace fossil fuels.

The leader will be responsible for identifying and developing turnkey green hydrogen projects with off-take opportunities across the full value chain, from renewables/water through downstream products such as compressed hydrogen, liquid hydrogen, and power-to-x fuels and feedstocks such as biofuels, sustainable aviation fuels, renewable diesel, renewable natural gas, green ammonia, and green chemicals. 

The role requires to lead to work directly with large marketing/trading companies, commercial and industrial (C&I) customers, and utilities to structure long-term off-take agreements (financial and physical) and manage all project development efforts including upstream renewable energy, water, and feedstock components, while considering the critical development requirements of the specific hydrogen project (e.g., land, water rights, pipeline access, product conversion, etc.). This includes site identification, land acquisition, project permitting, coordinating site studies and diligence, managing the interconnect process, progressing through FEED processes, managing project development budgets, establishing firm off-takes, and ensuring project successfully reach construction commencement.
The role also requires the ability to manage multiple project portfolios, attention to detail and travel as needed. The successful candidate will work on a cross functional team with Black & Veatch Solutions and Capabilities, new product development, origination, commercial, legal, finance, engineering, construction, outside consultants, landowners, off-takers, customers, project stakeholders, utility companies, and power aggregators. The role requires project management experience and expertise with hydrogen related technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Originate and develop a pipeline of turnkey hydrogen and power-to-x related clean energy projects in collaboration with cross functional teams across Black & Veatch.
  • Lead and manage all aspects of project development from origination through to construction commencement.
  • Lead a growing development and origination team.
  • Manage contract obligations, negotiate term sheets, and lead deal making activities such as credit, legal, and financial negotiations.
  • Facilitate the coordination between various internal teams and departments working on and supporting the delivery of turnkey development projects, including design, construction, finance, legal, and internal approvals.
  • Lead project meetings with internal and external stakeholders.

Management Responsibilities

Supervises work of others. Responsible for hiring, discipline, and pay administration of their subordinates.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related field required.

Preferred Qualifications

15+ years of Energy, Hydrogen and/or Sustainable / Biofuels Development experience preferred.

 

Preferred skills:

  • Proven experience with land acquisition, title, minerals, permitting, environmental, interconnection, feedstock acquisition and fuels / feedstock marketing aspects of data infrastructure project development.
  • Successful track record of managing complex and global portfolios in energy and/or infrastructure.
  • Extensive knowledge of the full-cycle of large-scale hydrogen and sustainable fuels development across multiple global markets.
  • Extensive knowledge of interconnection, permitting, real estate, state/federal regulation, utility procurement goals, politics, law and other issues that impact development of infrastructure projects across multiple global markets.
  • Has the experience to quickly identify critical flaws on early-stage projects.
  • Proactively anticipates and finds solutions to potential problems. 
  • Advanced understanding of economic drivers within our business and relationship between project characteristics and financial returns. 
  • Concisely frame issues by providing context, analysis, recommendations and risk/benefit tradeoffs, both in written and verbal format, to project teams and to senior management.
  • Create control and influence over the costs, terms, and schedules of key project milestones that are heavily dependent on external counterparties, often without strong commercial recourse.
  • Strong understanding of the relationships within a project schedule and costs in order to prioritize teams’ resource allocation.
  • Highly resourceful and able to design process for the advancement of project milestones and navigate through key risks where little structure is established.
  • Able to listen to team members and direct reports, quickly understand a situation, and provide sound guidance to move projects forward. 
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office suite tools, including Microsoft Project, as well as Google Earth.
  • Independent self-starter who can meet deadlines and deliver quality products with minimal oversight.
  • Substantial ability to recognize opportunities, identify and evaluate risks in a development context as well as effectively communicate the foregoing.
  • Ability to manage a large workload, often providing support to processes managed by colleagues, while prioritizing tasks and effectively juggling competing deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong sense of personal responsibility and ownership of work product.
  • Has an ability to effectively communicate complex ideas.
  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong people skills and the ability to work well with diverse teams under pressure and manage conflict. 
  • Effective manager of direct reports with coaching ability. 
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills with a global network.
  • Able to serve customers at a single point of contact; 
  • Understands how to communicate effectively with customers to accurately assess their needs; helps liaise between the project management team, the finance team, the origination team, the customer, and investors with consistency.
