Job Summary

Direct and supervise the visual and physical inspection of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, including electrical components, on uneven terrain, roofs or other structures in compliance with site assessment and schematics. May include measuring, cutting, torquing structural framing and solar modules supporting systems, testing of wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, motors, equipment, and control systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards. Plan and coordinate the efforts of the QC inspectors under his/her supervision and motivate them to accomplish the work safely, correctly and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use appropriate hand tools (i.e., crescent wrench, torque wrench, tape measure, screwdriver, laser, etc.) and power tools (i.e., Drills, Impact Wrenches) to perform a variety of functions to inspect photovoltaic (PV) systems in accordance with codes and standards using drawings, schematics, and instructions.
  • May complete solar electrical inspections.
  • Inspect structural, mechanical, rack system and PV panels.
  • Inspect civil installations including ponds, swales, roads, fencing, inverter pads, and backfill.
  • Supervisor and train QC Inspectors
  • Train other craft on proper installation practices and processes
  • Lead and support all safety related processes and programs as requested. Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries. No job is so important that your safety and that of your crew will be compromised. Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional. If needed, use your stop work authority until the issue is resolved.
  • Review crew's timecards for correct hours and phase coding.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor. Participate in investigation process as needed. Review accidents and the causes with employees.
  • Lead, complete, and sign off on daily pre‐job safety planning in the appropriate format. Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate or mitigate hazards. Assure all crew members understand, participate, and sign all pre‐job safety planning tools at start and end of shift.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (i.e., back‐up alarms, smell of smoke, different colored warning tags, warning sirens).
  • Understand, support, implement, and follow lockout/tag out procedures. Attend site specific training and assure you follow all procedures as out lined in training.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
  • Appropriately communicate with client representatives. Can represent quality in meetings such as POD, client quality meetings, client walk downs, etc.
  • Listen to other employees and supervisor's suggestions, complaints, problems, safety concerns and recommendations, evaluate each and then devise and implement a plan of action based on that evaluation. Consult with supervisor and if needed HR on any issues.
  • Coordinate and communicate work with other crafts and co‐workers on the job. As requested by project supervision manage other crafts when needed.
  • Provide on‐the‐job training to those individuals under his/her supervision.
  • Train/teach safety practices, policies and procedures related to an employee's assigned tasks.
  • Perform task planning to safely and efficiently carry out all aspects of that work assigned.
  • Plan and communicate with supervisor to assure that an adequate supply of tools, materials and equipment are available.
  • Complete inspections correctly and in a timely manner, meeting requirements of drawings, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Understand the Project Field Quality Control Plan, Quality Integrated Procedures, Construction Inspection Test Plans, and other contractual quality documents.
  • Ability to assist construction with the completion of quality checklists, including corresponding photos.

  • NCCER Carpenter

  • NCCER Reinforcing Ironwork

  • NCCER Rigger

  • NCCER Scaffolding

  • NCCER Fundamentals of Crew Leadership

  • NCCER Project Supervision

  • NCCER Project Management

Minimum Qualifications

At least 4 years combination of journeyman and QC experience, with at least 1 of those years being QC experience. Prior supervisor experience preferred. Must set standards of excellence in leadership, safety, quality, and productivity for the members of his/her crew. Must have leadership abilities and organizational skills. Must have all necessary tools (see Craft QC Tool List). Must be at least 18 years of age.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Typical construction site environment
  • Requires working in cramped work spaces and getting into awkward positions.
  • Requires working in very hot (above 90 F degrees) or very cold (below 32F degrees) temperatures and exposure to inclement weather such as dust, wind, snow, rain, etc.
  • Requires working in extremely bright or low lighting conditions
  • Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Work around hazardous equipment.
  • This position is considered a safety sensitive position.
