The Opportunity

This opportunity with Black & Veatch offers the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams within the Power Providers Market Sector, supporting Advanced Power Generation (APG) projects and building critical infrastructure for today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. Mechanical (piping) professionals contribute to project execution by developing and modifying piping layouts and models, coordinating system routing and interfaces with equipment, structures, and underground utilities. 

The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Assistant Engineering Technician plays a key role in supporting the development of highquality engineering deliverables for these complex infrastructure projects. Under close supervision, this position performs technical tasks requiring basic knowledge of engineering principles and practices, with a focus on developing and updating 3D piping layouts and model-based drawings using Bentley OpenPlant Modeler. 

Key Responsibilities

- Provides technical support to engineering teams under close supervision  
- Performs tasks requiring a basic understanding of engineering principles and practices  
- Uses digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) to assist with the creation, modification, and maintenance of technical documents and drawings and project deliverables  
- Participates in the evaluation of methods used in the development of deliverables and design activities to support continuous improvement and efficiency 
- Continuously learns and applies established standards, systems, document control practices, departmental guidelines, and BV policies and procedures.  
- Ensures deliverables are accurate and compliant by developing knowledge of the BV Quality Program.  
- Demonstrates strong personal accuracy and supports continuous improvement and change management initiatives.  
- Expands technical knowledge to modify and develop less complex deliverables using various design inputs.  
- May assist with minor technical tasks, such as material quantity estimates and dimensional checks.  
- May assist with coordination of deliverables with other project disciplines to reduce errors and interferences.  
- Prioritizes internal client needs while developing a basic understanding of external client drivers and expectations.  
- Proactively seeks out and shares knowledge of emerging technologies and processes 

Preferred Qualifications

Diploma or Certificate preferred. Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Typically a minimum of 1 year related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • This position would require working in a typical office environment. The position may entail prolonged periods of sitting and computer use, and the professional would ideally be able to maintain focus and attention to detail throughout the workday. The position may also be require physical tasks during site visits, including crouching, grasping, and standing/walking for extended periods of time.
  • Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
