The Opportunity

The Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer role is an entry-level position located in Arlington, Virginia, within our Engineering & Development Services group for a qualified engineering professional interested in working on projects in one or more of the many sectors that Black & Veatch supports like power generation, renewables, water treatment, oil and gas, cyber and physical security. Functions in an engineer capacity. Under close supervision, performs routine aspects of engineering assignments requiring knowledge and application of basic engineering principles. Applies knowledge of engineering principles to prescribed techniques and procedures to complete project assignments.

Key Responsibilities

As an entry-level Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer, you will support engineering tasks under close guidance, using company and client standards, design tools, and engineering codes along with Black & Veatch policies. You’ll help prepare technical documents including drawing packages, reports, equipment specifications, and design evaluations. You’ll learn to follow project scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards. As part of the Federal I&C team, you'll have opportunities to work on a range of systems such as electronic security (including cameras, intrusion detection, and access control), cybersecurity for facility control systems, power controls for building electricity and backup generators, and communications cabling. You may also get a chance to support commissioning activities during both design and construction. Most work will follow Unified Facility Criteria (UFC), which are government design standards, and uses Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS) to create specification packages. You’ll collaborate closely with your project team and begin to understand the needs of both internal and external clients.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations. Assigned to projects for U.S. Government Agency/Department clients. Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen.  

Work Environment

Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
