Job Summary

The Associate Acoustical Specialist role is an entry-level position on our Environmental Services team for a qualified engineering professional with a desire to work in the fields of acoustics and noise control for a global infrastructure consulting and engineering company. Our multidisciplinary Environmental team includes ecologists, engineers, scientists, project managers, and attorneys working together to identify optimum environmental solutions for our clients.  We have provided environmental consulting services in support of projects for over 40 years including a diverse and growing mix of facilities such as power generation and transmission, oil & gas pipelines and ocean terminals, water and wastewater treatment facilities, all forms of renewable and distributed energy including solar, wind, wave, geothermal, hydroelectric, and battery storage and a growing decarbonization practice.  As a full-service environmental consulting practice, services include impact assessment and planning, permitting and regulatory compliance, wetland and floodplain analysis, waterbody and water quality assessment, air quality permitting and management, environmental noise assessment, pollution prevention planning, National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) documentation, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) documentation, International Financing Act documentation, and sustainability consulting services.  The Associate Acoustical Specialist position provides an exciting opportunity to join B&V’s Environmental team.

Key Responsibilities

Our Acoustical Specialists support all phases of projects including siting, permitting, engineering design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.  They coordinate directly with project managers, proposal managers, chief engineers, and project design engineers from all divisions and businesses within Black & Veatch as well as with clients, facility owners, and equipment manufacturers. They review noise regulations, conduct ambient noise surveys, model facility noise emissions, evaluate potential community impacts, determine necessary mitigation, prepare required reports and documentation, support licensing efforts through agency and public review, and provide expert testimony as necessary. The Acoustical Specialists perform acoustical design studies to support project engineering, procurement, and construction activities, develop equipment sound level specifications and mitigation requirements to ensure compliance with the design objectives while maintaining a cost-effective facility design, and perform noise emissions performance tests to demonstrate compliance with all regulatory and contractual requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering preferred or any other degree, specialized training, or experience that uniquely qualifies the individual to perform the job responsibilities 
  • Academic exposure to acoustics and noise control
  • Basic knowledge of industrial technologies and trends
  • FE (EIT) with ability/interest in pursuing a PE
  • Positive, team-first attitude
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to learn on the fly and use engineering judgment to solve complex problems
  • Desire to develop industry leading solutions
