Duties

Perform engineering, and provide technical direction, oversight of engineers and technicians for substation projects from 34.5kV through 550kV.  Perform analysis, calculations, research, selection, layout, etc., necessary to develop required design documents.  Prepare design materials for moderately complex design assignments and lead basic design substation projects.  Coordinate design efforts with other project personnel in the same or other departments/disciplines.  Coordinated items include space control, schedule and layout optimization.  Maintain records, lists, schedules, etc., for High Voltage Substation engineering projects.  Collaborate with the client and other electrical and civil/structural engineers at Black & Veatch to improve existing and design new electrical utility facilities.  Design/prepare technical drawings, including wiring and schematic diagrams for relaying panels, SCADA drawings, one line diagrams, three line diagrams, AC/DC diagrams, electrical plan views, electrical section views, conduit/raceway plans, cable charts, grounding plans and bill of materials.  Perform various calculations, such as AC& DC load studies, lightning, battery sizing, battery charger sizing, cable sizing, voltage drop and conduit fill.  Train less experienced engineers and technicians and coordinate with the client on a regular basis.  Oversee schedules and budgets on moderately complex substation design projects.  While this position does not have any formal people management responsibilities, the position may have direct reports of electrical engineers or electrical engineer technicians.  No hire / fire authority.   Applicants for this position must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require employer sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (i.e., H-1B visa, TN visa or any other non-immigrant status).

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or related discipline, plus at least three years of related experience. Related experience must include:  high-voltage substation design (minimum of 34.5kV); creating and reviewing project schedules and budgets; performing quality analysis and quality control responsibilities; and designing and interpreting one lines, three lines, schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and physical substation drawings (i.e. plan views, section cuts, grounding, conduit, cable schedule, bill of materials, etc). Must have experience working with substation indoor and outdoor design.  Must have previous experience working with multinational teams.  Must have experience working with civil and construction engineers, construction support, internal and external client co-ordination, and procurement of major electrical equipment.  Must have experience with cost estimation and analyzed improvements in QA/QC of the design package.  Proficiency with Microsoft Office and PDF writing software such as Bluebeam Revu, Adobe, or related.  Must have experience with applicable codes and standards for substation projects, including NESC, NEC, and IEEE.  Telecommuting is permissible within a reasonable commuting distance from the Austin, Texas Black and Veatch Office.  National travel may be required up to 10%.  Must have good written and verbal communications skills in English.
