Job Summary

Serves as a junior process engineer focusing on drinking water treatment, reuse, and/or desalination. As a junior process engineer, you will develop and expand your knowledge of conventional and advanced water treatment processes under the guidance and supervision of a senior process engineer. The candidate should have some existing knowledge of drinking water regulations and treatment processes including coagulation, clarification, softening, media filtration, membrane filtration (microfiltration/ultrafiltration), reverse osmosis (brackish, seawater), UV/AOP, ozonation, carbon adsorption, and/or distribution system water quality. 

 

In this role, you will be expected to apply advanced engineering principles and techniques to solve complex water quality and treatment challenges. Project work may include water quality analysis, evaluation of alternative treatment technologies, conceptual design, applied research (bench-scale and pilot testing), and regulatory compliance studies. In this role, you will support senior process engineers with data anaysis and visualization to communicate complex topics to a wide range of technical and non-technical stakeholders. As projects progress into design, you will have the opportunity to work with diverse, multi-disciplinary teams to design and implement proposed treatment solutions. 

 

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to support senior process engineers with business development activities such as preparing marketing materials for pre-positioning and proposal development. In this role, you will have the opportunity to attend and present at local/national conferences and start building relationships with local clients.

 

Your role would include diverse opportunities in water treatment, ranging from treatment of conventional water sources (fresh groundwater and surface water), brackish ground water, and seawater desalination, reuse, and mining water. You will be part of a team that develops the strategy for process design of projects around the world.   
 

Key Responsibilities

Engineering: 

  • Assists in preparation of a variety of complex engineering deliverables, including process/mass balance calculations, design criteria/basis of design memoranda, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, tradeoff studies, and master planning studies
  • Under the guidance of a senior process engineer, typically supports multiple projects simultaneously with complex technical challenges 
  • Conducts applied research activities involving bench, pilot, and full-scale testing to select or assess performance of treatment processes 
  • Capable of performing independent research on alternative treatment processes and may be capable of developing recommendations for selection of treatment processes and equipment
  • Assists in collection, assimilation, analysis, and management of data for process design work  
  • Prepares moderately complex engineering calculations following standard methods and engineering principles  
  • Demonstrates strong technical writing skills and effective communication
  • Actively coordinates with internal and external team members for successful project execution

  • Actively seeks to understand client interests and drivers through normal client contact and through interaction and communication with project leadership
  • Applies understanding of client interest and drivers to their own behavior and performance of the work under his/her responsibility
  • Working closely with senior professionals, may provide support to business development or pursuit activities, including involvement in pre-positioning meetings and proposal development, 

Engineering Standards:

  • Continues to learn and remains current on departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black and Veatch Policies and Procedures
  • Applies standards to assigned tasks as appropriate
  • Begins to independently apply knowledge and complies with Black & Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks  
  • Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts 
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering with focus on water treatment preferred. 
  • At least 2 years of experience in water treatment 
  • Basic knowledge of process design for treatment of municipal effluent for reuse, brackish and seawater desalination, brine management, engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to assigned engineering discipline 
  • Understanding of consulting, project execution, client services, and business development.
  • Effective written and oral communications, Learning on the Fly, Drive for Results, Priority Setting, Planning, Informing, Listening, And Dealing with Ambiguity
     

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 1 year related work experience All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Certifications

Engineer in training (EIT) with aspirations to obtain professional engineering license.

Typical office environment, typical construction environment, extreme weather conditions, high noise level, safety hazards (electric currents, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to chemicals), atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation).
