You will be a self-motivated engineer willing to take on any task, working both individually and as part of our team of subject matter experts in the Boiler and Air Quality team.

The Boiler and Air Quality team is part of the Mechanical Equipment Group at Black & Veatch. The power industry is the focus of most of our jobs, but opportunities to support other industries, such as oil & gas, process, and others will be available. This job will also provide the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, as multiple jobs will be supported at any time.

The Team

Black & Veatch Operations develops, deploys, and maintains global resources and capabilities that guide execution and process excellence across the organization. The foundation of Black & Veatch Operations provides the ability to move where your skills are needed and allows for a collaborative and innovative culture offering greater challenges and career development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Critically think through issues clients experience with their steam generation (e.g., Rankine boilers, HRSGs, auxiliary boilers), draft (e.g., ID fans, ductwork), and air quality control equipment (e.g., FGDs, ESPs, PJFFs, and SCRs) and supporting systems to identify potential resolutions.
  • Have a working knowledge of how to apply design codes (e.g., ASME Section VIII, Division I; NFPA 85, etc.) and federal regulations (40 CFR 60, 75, and 63). Expertise is not required with any particular code, but familiarity with how to navigate, interpret, and apply codes is required.
  • Develop technical specifications for the procurement of steam generation, draft, and air quality control equipment.
  • Perform technical evaluations of formal bids received in response to issued specifications and support project teams in awarding the contract. This includes clarifying exceptions, deviations, and omissions by suppliers to the specification, leveling each bid against each other for a thorough evaluation.
  • Coordinate with equipment manufacturers to select the most technically acceptable design solutions.
  • Review drawings and documents from suppliers for completeness and acceptability of design and conformance to specifications and contracts.
  • Effectively communicate with other engineering disciplines to integrate equipment designs within the overall project.
  • Attend factory acceptance tests, identifying issues or confirming the equipment is ready to ship.
  • Support startup and commissioning teams.
  • Develop calculations to support projects’ design. A solid understanding of basic science and engineering principles is expected.
  • Write reports summarizing the work completed and the findings from studies executed for clients.
  • Support proposal efforts to win new work, estimating hours needed to execute potential jobs and helping write our proposal documents.
  • Interface with clients, leading project meetings.
  • Present at technical conferences when opportunities are available.
  • Assist juniors to develop their rotating equipment skills.
  • Around 10-25% travel can be expected. Some team members travel over 25%, while some travel less than 10%, and on average, a handful of week-long (or less) trips per year should be expected.

  • Exposure and familiarity with other engineering disciplines (e.g., electrical, civil, structural, I&C, chemical) and project groups (e.g., construction, controls, procurement, document control, etc.)
  • Experience with US EPA regulations and how they are applied to industry, specifically power plants via BACT, Four-Factor, and other analyses.
