Job Summary

The mechanical preconstruction engineering lead will serve as an interface between engineering functions and related preconstruction and construction functions on projects, with an emphasis on interfaces between mechanical design, estimating, and construction functions.  Focus will be on mining projects and the specific project delivery methods and interfaces points required for mining clients.  This includes interpretation of project scopes, understanding of multi-discipline design deliverables, and understanding of the processes to interface design with construction requirements.  This also includes understanding of construction methodologies, contracting strategies, cost and quantity development, schedule development, and supply chain interfaces. 

Key Responsibilities

Preconstruction:

  • Understands construction and construction management practices and the relationship between engineering, procurement, estimating, and construction to enable support in managing the interfaces between those groups on bids and project work.
  • Understands basic construction execution practices to help support constructability reviews, quantity take-offs, schedule development, logistics planning, contract strategy development, cost estimating and similar preconstruction activities as they relate to mechanical engineering and preconstruction interfaces.
  • For projects where B&V is the EPC contractor, supports the B&V EPC team in interpretation of client requirements and engineering team deliverables as they relate to preconstruction interfaces.
  • Can help with design of certain mechanical related construction facilities and equipment, such as temporary facilities, laydown areas, and construction permitting.
  • Understands typical project delivery utilized by mining clients and in particular front-end-loading (FEL) stage-gate delivery.

Cost Engineering:

  • Understands intermediate and advanced quantity and cost development principals to enable management of interfaces between engineering and detailed cost estimating staff.
  • Understand cost change management procedures to help support management of trends, change orders, and similar change management tools.

Scheduling/Planning:

  • Understands basic resource loaded schedule development principals to enable review and interpretation of schedules and to provide input to project schedulers to reflect design, cost, and construction conditions.
  • Interfaces with JV partners and subcontractors for planning and scheduling activities as needed.
  • Ensures constructability is part of the planning process.
Management Responsibilities
Acts in capacity of a "lead person." Does not have management responsibility for the people to whom they provide work direction.
Individual Contributor
Acts as a project manager. Among responsibilities is management of a project team. The individual comprising this team may vary by project.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education: BS or MS graduate in Mechanical Engineering preferred.  May consider other work experience in lieu of degree with proper construction background.
  • Experience:  Minimum of 10 years.  Familiarity with B&V mechanical engineering, preconstruction and estimating practices.
  • Training: Familiarity with B&V standards tools for content management, estimating, and preconstruction.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 15 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
Certifications
Most positions - depending on the nature of work performed as defined by the division - will typically require incumbents to have professional registration or licensure in their designated home office country, or be in active pursuit* of such registration
