Job Summary

Black & Veatch has an exciting opportunity for a Planning Engineer in Denver, CO.  The ideal candidate will have previous experience with water or wastewater system hydraulic modeling and planning and have a strong interest in specializing in water and wastewater planning and optimization studies.

Our U.S. water and wastewater planning business has seen consistent growth driven by our clients’ needs to address challenges stemming from water scarcity, climate variability, population growth, aging infrastructure and the need for better asset management systems, reduction in revenues, and evolving water quality regulations. In Colorado and many other areas of the U.S., we anticipate an increased demand for integrated waters supply and distribution system planning, wastewater, recycled water planning and design driven by population growth and aging infrastructure, as well as by new regulations and the increasing need to improve system resiliency.  This position reflects Black & Veatch’s need to growth our Planning group in the Front Range as well as nationally.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a Planning Engineer in Black & Veatch’s industry leading National Planning group
  • Local, national, and global project assignment opportunities
  • Use of cutting-edge modeling, optimization, and GIS software to solve client issues
  • Performs system analyses and calculations with software tools and develops concise reports documenting results
  • Duties focus in the practice areas of Distribution & Collection, Supply & Hydrogeology, and Watersheds & Stormwater
  • Perform and manage technical work on water and wastewater planning studies including:
    • Hydraulic and distribution system modeling
    • Water balance and water supply modeling
    • Integrated water resources planning and optimization
    • One Water evaluations including integrated surface water, groundwater, reuse, brackish water, and demand management strategies
    • Support risk and resilience evaluations in addition to multi-objective robust decision making (MORDM) techniques that mitigate vulnerabilities stemming from climate change, asset failure, regulatory changes, population and demand uncertainties, etc.
    • Capital Improvement Program (CIP) planning
    • Evaluating water system water quality
    • Planning water supply, distribution and wastewater systems
    • Analyzing historical demands/flows and preparing future demand/flow projections
    • Pumping and storage capacity analyses
    • Financial analyses and projections
  • Support marketing and business development activities related to water, wastewater, and recycled water planning and asset management
  • Build relationships with key planning leaders in the Denver market area and throughout the Front Range
Management Responsibilities
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2+ years professional experience and/or college education with cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher in areas civil or environmental engineering with an emphasis in Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics, and/or Water Resources
  • Experience and/or familiarity with Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and GIS software (i.e. ArcGIS)
  • Capable in MSWord, MSExcel, PowerPoint
  • Experience and/or familiarity with hydraulic modeling and optimization software such as:
    • WaterGEMS / SewerGEMS
    • InfoWater / InfoSewer / InfoSWMM / InfoWorks
    • EPA Net / EPA SWMM
    • GoldSim, STELLA, MODSIM
    • MORDM and MOEA tools such as Python, Borg, Optimatics
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 3 years related work experience All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
