Black & Veatch’s Renewable Energy division has the capability to deliver to clients a broad array of services, from renewables strategic planning and project development support to project implementation, grid connection, and asset management. More than 250 Black & Veatch professionals have experience with renewable projects, spanning virtually all technologies (wind, solar thermal, solar photovoltaics, biomass, hydro, geothermal, landfill gas, marine, and others). As part of BV Operations and supporting BV’s Energy & Process business, this engineer will support utility scale solar projects. Your Responsibilities...

The Lead Electrical Engineer will serve as a technical specialist or as a lead solar design engineer. You will develop and apply advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to complex engineering problems. You will provide technical guidance or supervise engineering staff on solar design projects. In addition, you may be responsible for developing, validating, and presenting specialist/technical output as well as leading other engineers and interfacing directly with clients.  Lastly, you will be responsible for the overall execution and quality of solar projects as a leader within a team environment.


  • Creating oneline drawings.
  • Creating collection system overall layout.
  • Power cable sizing, cable schedules.
  • Electrical equipment sizing and selection.
  • Experience with specifying and procuring electrical equipment (listed below).
  • Understand and be able to work within a schedule and manhours budget.
  • Familiar with applicable NEC and IEEE/ANSI standards.
  •  Electrical equipment includes but is not limited to: MV and LV switchgear, pad mount transformer, Transformer -GSUT, panel boards, breakers, protective relays, inverter, battery, battery chargers, disconnect switches, surge arrestors, dead front disconnect switch, medium voltage cable, low voltage cable, control cable, fiber optic cable.
  •  Prepares complex engineering calculations such as:  load flow, short circuit and reactive capability analysis (ETAP or SKM), Arc flash analysis (ETAP or SKM), Cable ampacity study (CYMCAP or equivalent), grounding analysis, AC-DC voltage drop calculations, VOC/ISC calcs, AC/DC Cable sizing.


Leadership Opportunities:

  •  Mentor less experienced engineers and direct reports and provide constructive feedback on performances.


Mentorship opportunities:

  • For the first 30 days, you will have a dedicated Onboarding Champion that will provide operational information and answer general questions.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Executed at least 1-2 Solar projects.
  • At least 2 years of solar experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to assigned engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer License (PE).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.
  • Minimum of 8-year related work experience.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.


  • Professional Engineer License (PE)

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Typical office environment:  extensive sitting, keyboarding and telephone usage.  Limited lifting/carrying of files and boxes.
