Job Summary

Under the umbrella of the NMB Water CIP program, this position works full-time to support client leadership and Black & Veatch’s Design and Construction phase managers as needed to support Capital Improvement Program (CIP) implementation and respond to ad hoc administrative requests. The position works from client offices and project sites to provide day-in/day-out general technical and office support to B&V’s Program Management team.  In essence, this position may involve coordination between consultants, client departments, external agencies, contractors, property owners and other utilities as assigned by the Program Manager. The Office Engineer is responsible for managing the flow of documents between internal and external partners, preparing project reports for the office, and helping to coordinate or perform ad hoc assignments related to planning, engineering and/or construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide support directly to the B&V Program Manager, client leadership, B&V’s Pre-Construction Management team and to B&V’s Construction Management team or their designees.
  • Support the Program Manager with ad hoc assignments including routine development of certain technical planning documents, coordinating or completing technical or administrative tasks requested by the Program Manager, and/or conducting spot-checks of Program files to assure compliance with the Program Management Plan (PMP).
  • Support the Program Pre-Construction Management team on various W/WW planning, design management, permitting, Grant applications, Environmental Review documentation, and procurement activities.
  • Support the Construction Management team with routine document control and construction administration support. 
  • Maintains a daily log for site record purposes. Completes quantity take-offs as required to support construction planning and invoice approval . Reviews progress payment requests for acceptance. Compiles and maintains Conformed to Construction Records drawing and list markups as assigned. Directs site document control activities for design documents . Assists in performing inspections and verification of tests. Adheres to safety and quality standards as appropriate for level of duties and accountabilities. Supports continuous improvement efforts and the change management effects associated with the implementation of improvements. Reviews, maintains records, and responds to Contractor Information Requests (CIRs) as assigned. Acts in capacity of a "lead person". Does not have management responsibility for the people to whom they provide work direction except as assigned. 
  • May coordinate with outside B&V support professionals/engineers, or client consultant/contractor representatives as needed by the Program team.
  • Supports the Program Manager and team on activities related to the Program oversight such as KPI’s, Permits and Risk tracking, as well as monthly updates to the online CIP Dashboard.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 to 4 years design and/or construction inspection experience for linear (W/WW) infrastructure (W/WW) or Water Treatment Plants or Transportation / Stormwater drainage projects.
  • Preferred Skills: Knowledge of engineering drawings and specifications, project schedules, and other construction documents . Ability to do material takeoffs, field estimates . Communication skills . Organizational skills . Safety regulations . Discipline engineering experience . Supervisory skills . Contract administration 

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either an ABET accredited program in the USA or an engineering program, offered by a foreign institution, accepted as valid in the home country or the country in which the individual is practicing. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Physical Demands:
• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds. 
• Stand, Kneel, Bend, Stoop, Move, and Walk long distances in and around confined, cluttered places, and uneven areas.
• See and hear naturally or with correction.   
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with requirements of the job duties. 
• Requires using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls according to a set procedure. 
• Requires repetitive movement. 
• May require work above 5 feet in height.
• Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders and scaffolds. 
• Work up to a 12 hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside conditions.

• Requires working in cramped work spaces and getting into awkward positions. 
• Requires working in very hot (above 90 F degrees) or very cold (below 32F degrees) temperatures and exposure to inclement weather such as dust, wind, snow, rain, etc. 
• Requires working in extremely bright or low lighting conditions 
• Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. 
• Work around hazardous equipment.
• Typical office environment.
• This position is considered a safety sensitive position.
