Job Summary

The Network Architect functions as an advanced technical architect to design, develop and apply moderate to advance network concepts and approaches to unique Telecommunications (IP/Transport) network. Develops and applies advanced knowledge, engineering techniques, concepts, and approaches to unique engineering problems with minimal oversite. Will supervise engineering staff on projects of medium to high complexity or serve as a senior technical specialist providing knowledge and advanced. 

Key Responsibilities

The professional will be responsible for planning, assessment, architecture, design, implementation and optimization for Black & Veatch’s utility clients. Analyzes client’s business needs to develop telecommunications strategy and technology solutions. Will offer technical advisory and consulting services to the client. Provides Subject Matter Expert (SME) support to business development and pursuit activities, including creating proposal, scope, level of effort estimation and implementation plans. Leads, mentors and participates in project execution and technical delivery.

Key duties include:
•    Communicating directly with clients (sometimes non-technical clients) to identify current and future network and telecommunication needs
•    Creating master communication plans to meet those client needs and receive buy-in from the client
•    Collaborate with and/or delegate responsibilities to a team of engineers
•    Assesses industry standards for models, and where appropriate, incorporates them into client solutions
•    Participates as technical subject matter expert on major projects and application roll-outs
•    Responsible for developing and adhering to all engineering/quality processes and procedures and all documentation/tools
•    Work hand-in-hand with project management on project delivery and technical issues
•    Assists in developing and managing scope, schedule and budget requirements
•    Leads portions of production teams and coordinates multiple discipline activities
•    Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts
•    Advanced with written and graphical documentation and processes
•    Validates work of lower level network engineers
•    Capable of day-to-day operational stability with the continual need to improve existing services and deploy new services, processes and technologies
•    Create or expand utility communication systems which best meets the client requirements
•    Understands, advocates, and supports Information Technology (IT) and Operation Technology (OT) strategies
•    Mentors and trains others on the network services team
•    Is externally recognized in industry as an expert that enhances the Company brand
•    Support the pursuit and development of current and new business opportunities
•    Ability to identify issues and provide feedback for best practices implementation 
•    Ability to plan, organize and implement technical solutions

Management Responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications

Typically, a minimum of 7+ years network related work experience. Utility experience preferred.
Technical Competencies:
•    Advanced knowledge of IP/Transport data network engineering design principles, guidelines and standards.
•    Advanced knowledge in design and implementation for highly resilient and scalable network architecture as it relates to the following, but not limited to: Layer 1,2 and 3, LAN, WAN, MPLS and QoS 
•    Knowledge of transport technologies such as, Multiplexing, DWDM, SONET, etc.
•    IP4 and/or IPv6 address planning
•    Understanding of network security practices and practical application
•    Test plan development
•    Multi-vendor experience
•    Advanced knowledge of telecommunications technologies and architectures
•    Advanced ability to scope engineering deliverable content
•    Advanced knowledge of industry and technology trends
•    Advanced knowledge of technical aspects of the proposal process
•    Knowledge of network related physical construction & constructability practices & principles
•    General understanding of AC/DC power principles, grounding, and industry cabling/wiring standards
•    Knowledge of procurement & contract administration
•    Knowledge of process, procedures for project controls and estimating
•    Business & financial acumen
•    Knowledge of, or experience with configuring telecommunications equipment
•    Advanced written communication skills especially pertaining to creating and publishing professional processes and procedures, including System Requirements, Method of Procedures (MOPs), work packages, Request for Information (RFI) and Request for Proposals (RFP), among other related deliverables.

Minimum Qualifications

Certifications

Vendor and recognized independent certifications a plus (e.g. PMP, CISM, CCNP, CCDE, CCIE, etc.)

Typical office environment.  Home office work space and internet connection to support work from home.  Physical Demands: Sitting, talking, grasping, hearing, keyboard input, driving, seeing, writing, reaching, stooping, crouching, walking, standing for extended periods of time.
