The Opportunity

The Associate General Counsel – Compliance will serve as the legal lead responsible for managing and enhancing the company’s compliance program. This role will oversee key compliance areas including anti-bribery and anti-corruption (ABAC), antitrust/competition law, data privacy, sanctions, and trade controls. Reporting directly to the Head of Risk, Compliance and Insurance, the successful candidate will lead one direct report and collaborate closely with internal stakeholders and external advisors to mitigate legal and regulatory risks across our global footprint.

The Team

Black & Veatch’s Business Enablement consists of critical groups that help enable the organizations people, projects, and businesses to be as successful as possible. Functions in this group include Digital & Information Technology, Global Finance, Global Human Resources, Legal, Risk Management, and Government Affairs and Real Estate and Building Services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the compliance department, ensuring adherence to all relevant laws, regulations, and corporate policies across North America, Europe, Middle East, and Asia Pacific.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee robust anti-bribery and anti-corruption programs aligned with applicable laws such as the U.S. FCPA, UK Bribery Act, and other relevant jurisdictional requirements.
  • Manage antitrust and competition law compliance initiatives, including training, risk assessments, and investigations.
  • Guide the company’s data privacy compliance efforts in alignment with global standards such as GDPR, CCPA, and other applicable privacy laws.
  • Oversee sanctions and trade controls compliance to ensure lawful international transactions and operations.
  • Provide legal advice and strategic guidance to senior management, business units, and project teams on compliance-related matters.
  • Lead investigations into compliance violations and coordinate remediation activities.
  • Conduct risk assessments and compliance audits, reporting findings and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Develop and deliver training programs and communications to promote a culture of compliance and ethical conduct.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., Legal, Risk, Procurement, HR) and external counsel to address emerging compliance risks and regulatory changes.
  • Manage relationships with regulatory bodies and respond to inquiries or investigations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; additional qualifications or licenses in other relevant jurisdictions a plus.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience as a practicing lawyer with a focus on compliance, preferably in the engineering, procurement, or construction industries or comparable sectors.
  • Deep expertise in anti-bribery and anti-corruption laws, antitrust, privacy, sanctions, and trade controls.
  • Proven experience managing global compliance programs with multi-jurisdictional complexities.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage, mentor, and develop direct reports.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to influence and build relationships at all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience handling regulatory investigations and internal compliance audits.
  • Fluency in additional languages and experience with operations in Europe, Middle East, and Asia Pacific is advantageous.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field, or related experience required.
  • 5+ years related experience, including 4+ years in a Legal organization required. Engineering and construction industry experience preferred.
