The Opportunity

Black & Veatch has an exciting opportunity to join our growing corrosion practice as part of our Infrastructure Advisory Technical Delivery team. This role supports a diverse portfolio of projects focused on pipelines, tanks, and related infrastructure across water, electric, and power generation clients. 

Within our corrosion practice, we continue to see strong demand driven by aging infrastructure and the need for improved understanding of asset condition and performance. Corrosion control and cathodic protection play a critical role in extending asset life and improving system reliability. 

As a Consultant, you will work alongside experienced corrosion engineers and specialists while taking increasing ownership of cathodic protection design, field investigations, system evaluations, troubleshooting, and technical deliverables. The role combines hands-on field work with engineering analysis and design and provides opportunities to develop deeper technical expertise in corrosion control and cathodic protection.  

 

This position provides the opportunity to: 

  • Contribute to meaningful projects by supporting field investigations, evaluating corrosion risks, and developing practical solutions for asset integrity and long-term performance. 
  • Participate in field investigations, data analysis, and engineering evaluations of infrastructure assets, supporting corrosion control and condition assessment activities for pipelines, tanks, and related facilities. 
  • Work closely with experienced engineers and field specialists across our national practice, gaining hands-on experience in cathodic protection systems, condition assessment technologies, and data-driven decision making.  
  • Contribute to delivering projects for a wide range of clients, including water, electric, and power generation utilities. 
  • Work in both field and office environments, developing practical and analytical skills in corrosion engineering and cathodic protection systems. 
  • Work in both the field and office, enabling you to Build technical depth while contributing to project delivery for a wide range of clients.

The Team

In this role, you will be part of Black & Veatch’s national Corrosion and Cathodic Protection practice within the Infrastructure Advisory Technical Delivery team. The corrosion practice supports clients across water, energy, power generation, and other infrastructure markets through cathodic protection design, corrosion assessments, field investigations, system evaluations, and technical consulting. 

Black & Veatch’s Infrastructure Advisory Business provides a portfolio of solutions focused on the asset lifecycle, including Condition Assessment, Asset Management, Operations & Maintenance, Infrastructure Technology, Cybersecurity, Planning, and Transactions. 

The Consulting Team is a diverse group of professionals who work across a wide range of technical projects and disciplines, providing opportunities to build a strong technical foundation and develop deeper expertise as they advance in their careers. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and perform field activities related to corrosion assessment and cathodic protection of pipelines, tanks, and associated infrastructure. 
  • Conduct cathodic protection system testing, commissioning, performance evaluation, and troubleshooting. 
  • Analyze and interpret field data to identify corrosion risks, evaluate cathodic protection performance, and develop technical recommendations. 
  • Support the development of cathodic protection system designs, including design calculations, current requirement evaluations, anode and groundbed sizing, rectifier and equipment selection, electrical isolation, monitoring provisions, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. 
  • Support evaluation and rehabilitation of existing cathodic protection and corrosion monitoring systems. 
  • Prepare technical reports, calculations, memoranda, specifications, and other engineering deliverables with limited to moderate supervision. 
  • Coordinate field activities, subcontractors, equipment, access, and project logistics, and assist in resolving field-related challenges. 
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations to project teams and clients through written deliverables, field discussions, and client meetings. 
  • Coordinate with engineers, analysts, designers, and other technical specialists to support successful project delivery. 
  • Provide technical guidance to junior staff and support the development of field and analytical capabilities within the team. 
  • Support development of project scopes, level-of-effort estimates, and proposal materials as experience progresses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in engineering or a related technical field. 
  • AMPP CP3 certification or higher. 
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License. 
  • Experience preparing cathodic protection calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports. 
  • Experience working in an engineering consulting environment. 
  • Experience with pipelines, tanks, water infrastructure, power generation facilities, or other buried metallic infrastructure.
  • AMPP/NACE CP certification (CP-2 or above) 
  • Experience performing cathodic protection and corrosion field testing 
  • Familiar with field testing methods such as: 
  • Wenner four-pin soil resistivity testing 
  • Structure-to-electrolyte potential measurements 
  • Close Interval Potential Surveys (CIPS) 
  • Electrical continuity and isolation testing 
  • Current requirement testing 
  • Rectifier testing and adjustment 
  • Stray current and interference testing 
  • Cathodic protection system surveys, commissioning, and troubleshooting 
  • Ability to plan and execute field assignments with limited supervision. 
  • Ability to analyze field data and clearly document technical findings and recommendations. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication, time management, and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to travel approximately 20% or as required by project assignments.   

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, materials science, corrosion engineering, or a related technical field, or relevant experience 
  • Minimum of 4 years of related experience in cathodic protection, corrosion control, condition assessment, or similar infrastructure work. 

Certifications

NACE/AMPP Certified

This position will be based out of Black & Veatch office location within the United States.  

Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments. 

This position will require individuals to work within confined spaces at times.
