The Opportunity

Black & Veatch is seeking a Director of Tax to lead the company’s worldwide corporate tax function in support of the company’s continued growth and success. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the leader will implement tax strategy, and oversee tax compliance, tax accounting, and tax risk management across the many jurisdictions Black & Veatch operates. Provides input to senior leadership about tax impact of transactions and development of global tax strategies. 

 

The ideal candidate has significant expertise in international tax, transfer pricing, transaction structuring, and ensuring tax efficiency while maintaining compliance with ever evolving global requirements. This leader will oversee a highly experienced team of tax professionals focused on international tax, US Federal & State income tax, property tax, and sales and use tax. The leader will also closely partner with Black & Veatch’s Segment, Solution, Region, and other Business Enablement leaders as well as its outside tax advisers. 

The Team

Black & Veatch’s Business Enablement consists of critical groups that help enable the organizations people, projects, and businesses to be as successful as possible. Functions in this group include Digital & Information Technology, Global Finance, Global Human Resources, Legal, Risk Management, and Government Affairs and Real Estate and Building Services.

Key Responsibilities

Compliance & Reporting: 

  • Leads the preparation of tax provisions and disclosures in financial statements according to GAAP. 
  • Manages the global effective tax rate and cash tax models, maintaining and creating new tools to influence tax planning and other opportunities. 
  • Tracks and monitors global Uncertain Tax Positions and income tax audits. 
  • Oversight and management of all intercompany transaction setup and transfer pricing activities. Oversee transfer pricing strategy, ensuring compliance with OECD guidelines, BEPS Pillar Two, Country-by-Country Reporting requirements, and local country regulations. 
  • Provides regular updates on tax projects to key stakeholders, including the Vice President of Finance, CFO, and senior leadership using clear communication to enhance understanding of tax matters. 

Planning & Research: 

  • Partners with other key stakeholders within the company to proactively research and evaluate the tax requirements, costs, and risks associated with projects, ensuring tax implications are addressed before client contracts are executed to mitigate unexpected tax costs or exposures. 
  • Assists in tax special projects involving US and non-US technical analysis, modeling of book and cash tax consequences of tax planning strategies, and project management and execution support for implementation. 
  • Ensures tax planning for domestic and international projects from proposal to execution is properly handled, including establishing contract structure and providing comprehensive tax cost estimates. 

Supervisory/Management: 

  • As a department leader, oversees performance management, career planning, recognition, learning and development for direct reports and provides direction regarding performance management and career planning. Aligns individual professional's goals with that of department and company. Evaluates team training needs and guides staff growth and development. Seeks to understand and implement training needs and process improvements. 
  • Initiates and guides development, communication and implementation of policies, procedures, and processes for the group. 
  • Identifies and assesses improvement opportunities which will add value. Champions continuous improvement efforts. Assesses and supports the change management effects associated with the implementation of improvements. Proactively supports, encourages and facilitates staff to engage in continuous improvement activities. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex matters in a succinct manner for executive-level consumption. 
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Juris Doctor (JD), Master of Laws (Tax LLM), MS in Tax or Accounting, preferred. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Business or equivalent experience
  • Typically 12+ years related experience
  • Experience in hiring and supervising professionals required
