The Opportunity
As the Employee Relations Manager, you will have the opportunity to:
- Support Black & Veatch’s mission, vision, values and objectives by providing coaching, training, guidance and policy interpretation to the Human Resources Partners, leaders and professionals on a variety of topics including terminations, promotions, performance management, corrective action, employee relations, and compliance matters
- Lead investigations on employee issues, complaints or other matters in a centralized Employee Relations function
- Be responsible for U.S. OFCCP/Affirmative Action Plan compliance and other required reporting
- Develop, recommend and implement personnel policies and processes, training and best practices regarding employment law and regulations, compliance and Employee Relations
- Develop and manage positive employee engagement initiatives
- Work collaboratively as part of the Global Employee Relations team.
The Team
Black & Veatch’s Business Enablement consists of critical groups that help enable the organizations people, projects, and businesses to be as successful as possible. Functions in this group include Digital & Information Technology, Global Finance, Global Human Resources, Legal, Risk Management, and Government Affairs and Real Estate and Building Services.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and conduct workplace investigations in employment related matters including harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and other potential Black & Veatch policy and code of conduct violations. Responsibilities include advising and managing performance issues, complaints and investigations in order to resolve problems and reduce legal risk.
- Educate, train and guide HR Partners, managers and supervisors in practices that help ensure equitable treatment of professionals and in compliance with state and federal employment laws, employee relations best practices and strategies.
- Implement a comprehensive strategy to promote ER best practices throughout the organization, including our global locations.
- Partner and collaborate with key stakeholders to promote respect and dignity in the workplace to respond appropriately and fairly to concerns.
- Assist in developing and managing positive employee relations initiatives, affirmative action outreach and education programs to include AAP and compliance audit practices.
- Develop, recommend and implement personnel policies and processes which comply with U.S. state and federal law, enhance the workplace and promote the company culture. Provide thought leadership in employee relations to further best practices and progressive employee relations solutions.
- Serve as a resource to management and Human Resources Partners in employment law and the application/interpretation of policies. Work with Legal and Risk Management on advisement and counsel of laws, practices and risk mitigation.
- Provide oversight and management of the Employee Assistance Program and other vendor relationships.
- Ability to utilize and leverage data and analysis in the identification of emerging and progressive global employee relations trends and practices.
- Research, develop and implement best practices & strategies for ER case management and standardization.
- Oversight and development of the internal Human Resources Partners and Employee Relations sites and portals.
- Work with ER team on Department of Labor and OFCCP compliance activities and the development and production of the Company’s Affirmative Action Plans. Provided needed information related to compliance as needed for bids and proposals.
- Identify and propose strategies and solutions for improvement areas. Contribute significantly to strategic ER initiatives.
- Support Global Director of Employee Relations on special projects, team assignments, issue analysis, and other responsibilities as assigned.

- Extensive knowledge of U.S. federal, state and local employment laws and employee relations trends.
- Understanding, experience and leadership of OFCCP, AAP and other compliance-related matters.
- Strong conflict management skills.
- Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to build trust and confidence with all levels throughout the organization.
- Experienced decision-making ability with sound reasoning and judgment required.
- Demonstrated success in influencing professionals at all levels of the company using a consultative methodology.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong technical skills with proven ability in data analytics and research.
- Ability to build strong, inclusive, and collaborative working relationships.
- Ability to be a flexible, thoughtful leader and business partner who has the capability to mentor, coach and to listen effectively at all levels of the organization.
- Outstanding organizational skills; including the ability to effectively prioritize and meet deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 7+ years progressive HR experience in Employee Relations or HR with a strong background in workplace investigations.
- Experience solving complex employee relations issues.
- Extensive knowledge of U.S. federal, state and local employment laws and employee relations trends.
- Understanding, experience and leadership of OFCCP, AAP and other compliance-related matters.
- Strong conflict management skills.
- Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to build trust and confidence with all levels throughout the organization.
- Experienced decision-making ability with sound reasoning and judgment required.
- Demonstrated success in influencing professionals at all levels of the company using a consultative methodology.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
