The Opportunity

A HVAC and plumbing engineer interested in working on a diverse collection of building configurations. Under general supervision, capable of performing all aspects of conventional design engineering, analysis, and studies on new and existing structures.  

Key Responsibilities

The Mechanical Buildings Design Group provides HVAC and plumbing solutions for Black & Veatch’s Global projects.  The Mechanical Engineer level 2 position is responsible for the engineering and design of the HVAC and plumbing systems in various types of structures.   

 The HVAC Team is engaged in the following: 

 

  • Design and Construction Activities  
  • Project Delivery Methods - Traditional Design-Bid-Build and Alternative Conceptual-Bid-Build. 
  • Facility Types – Data Centers, Water Treatment, Power Generation buildings, Substations, and Energy Storage buildings.  
  • Systems – HVAC and Plumbing. 
  • Type of Areas – Office/Administrative, Commercial, Warehouse, Maintenance, Workshop, Laboratory, Chemical Storage & Handling, Power Generation, Electrical Distribution Center, Low & Medium Voltage Switchgear, Pump Areas, Engine Generator, Blowers/Air Compressors, and Flammable & Combustible Liquids Storage.  
  • Studies  
  • Energy Audit/Efficiency - Engineering studies, system performance reviews, and energy compliance calculations 
  • Code Review/Application - Facility review for code compliance 
  • Sustainable Design/LEED - Application of sustainable strategies 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Self-Motivated, Problem Solving, Written Communications, Driven for Results, Quality Focused, Strong Listening Skills
  • Proficient understanding of engineering design principles and the following applicable design guides and standards related to HVAC, and plumbing system design. Including a basic knowledge of the following: 
    • Power plant design.  
    • International Codes Council (ICC) Suite of Codes 
    • ASHRAE Handbooks / Standards 
    • SMACNA Standards 
    • NUREG, Nuclear Regulatory Commission 
    • NFPA standards 
    • Computer generated HVAC Heat loads, energy modeling and HVAC equipment sizing 
    • Technical Submittal reviewing process bid reviewing process 
    • Microsoft Office Suite 
    • Bluebeam Revu

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing
  • Minimum of 1 year related work experience
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Certifications

Typically expect incumbents to have passed the EIT and be able to obtain a professional engineering licensure once eligible.  

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
