California continues to lead the United States in the development of advanced energy policy and the development of distributed renewable energy. Black & Veatch has been actively involved in integrated resource planning activity across the state, as well as the application of novel techniques for integrated planning involving distributed energy resources. Our practice also works at the intersection of electric power and natural gas markets. BVMC is seeking a seasoned professional to lead its Energy Markets activity in California as an Energy Markets Director. This person will have the expertise and experience to lead consulting engagements for advanced resource planning and strategic energy advisory. Strong candidates will have experience with energy markets in California and the western interconnection. They will also understand advanced integrated planning approaches in California, including Distribution Resources Plans. The successful candidate will be able to leverage these skills to work across Black & Veatch business units, implementing strategies that result in sales and strengthening of the Black & Veatch brand.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The Energy Markets Director will be involved in providing market intelligence, directing consulting engagements and executing strategic business development efforts for the assigned accounts and prospects in the CAISO market region and State of California. This person will be responsible for refining and implementing go to market strategies, focused on leading business capture and expanding ongoing relations with existing and potential clients. The Energy Markets Director will identify and meet with key client personnel and decision makers, and establish and encourage relationships between clients and Black & Veatch operating personnel.
BVMC is selectively expanding within one of the world’s most respected engineering, consulting and construction management firms. We seek a manager-level professional to join more than 300 consultants, regulatory policy advisors, technology specialists, and internationally respected subject matter experts. The consulting practice offers a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach that integrates strategic, operations, financial and process-based advisory services to private and investor-owned energy companies, municipalities, and government agencies. The consulting practice, as a whole, provides services in the world-wide power generation, electric, oil & gas, renewable and water market segments.
Bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience. Has successfully managed multiple engagements simultaneously. Contributor or leader to acquire new engagements. 12-15+ years in a business/consulting environment. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
10 + years consulting and power supply planning experience within California.
Knowledge and experience with: power production modeling, regional regulations and policies, market design, market operating rules, financial analysis and economic models
Understanding of electric power commercial and regulatory practices. Familiarity with utility planning processes including Distribution Resources Plans.
Experience dealing with power generation asset owners, asset/portfolio managers, utility management, technology experts and other consultants.
Ability and experience working with an internal multi-discipline team of engineers, consultants, and financial analysts.
Experience and qualifications that are usually gained through experience as a consultant, engineer or plant engineer.
Advanced degree in engineering, mathematics, economics, or business discipline.
