A Black & Veatch Lead Substation Engineer works on diverse and challenging projects from greenfield installations to retrofits. Our Lead Substation Engineers are given the responsibility for engineering design, material, equipment, and construction specification development for medium/high voltage substation projects. The assignments are varied and will include engineering, construction support, and Engineer Procure & Construct (EPC) projects. This position offers the opportunity to lead a team as well as learn about other engineering disciplines, develop additional areas of technical expertise of interest, and function as the primary client interface on technical and engineering issues.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Engineering • Provides leadership and oversight on assigning tasks related to department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies • Overseas developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards • Provide technical mentorship and acts as a resource to others regarding projects and design
Quality / Continuous Improvement: • Independently apply knowledge and complies with the Black & Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks when reviewing team’s work • Responsibilities could include ensuring compliance with the Black & Veatch quality program • Provide related leadership and oversight to others • Encourage continuous improvement and change management efforts Engineering Production: • Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects • Review research and recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection • Review complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles • Communicate status of assigned budget, schedule, and design to Project Manager • Independently advise on engineering techniques and analysis problems and methods Project Coordination: • Actively coordinate with other internal and external leads on moderately complex projects Client Focus: • Responsible for identification of key client interests and drivers on moderately complex projects • Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work • Provide support to business development or pursuit activities Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology: • Serve as a technical expert and have knowledge and skillset to provide consultation and guidance to project
teams in a particular practice area • Support multiple projects on the technical challenges • Actively provides knowledge sharing and mentoring • Develop and apply advanced engineering concepts and approaches to unique engineering problems Administrative: • Ensure policies, procedures, and processes are effectively implemented and communicated for workgroup • Ensure adherence to corporate and division programs
Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 8 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
• 8 years work experience in Substation Design and/or Control & Protection on Substation Projects including leading projects and teams
