The Opportunity

Black & Veatch is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to join the Mechanical Systems team and function as a Senior Project Discipline Engineer (PDE) specific to Industrial Water projects. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead a design team comprised of Mechanical Systems engineers on water and wastewater treatment facilities for a variety of Industrial Water clients.
  • Work collaboratively with various design engineering execution teams across the US and abroad.
  • Lead, plan, coordinate, and oversee mechanical engineering activities for Industrial Water including water and wastewater treatment, reuse, desalination, and utility infrastructure projects throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Integrate with a well-established Mechanical Systems team comprised of subject matter experts with extensive experience across a wide range of mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Play a key role in the continued growth and expansion of Black & Veatch's Industrial Water business.

Candidates are expected to possess demonstrated experience in the planning, design, specification, procurement, and construction support of mechanical systems for industrial water and wastewater facilities. Such systems include, but are not limited to, pumps and pumping systems, compressors, blowers and aeration systems; piping and valve design, packaged treatment equipment, water storage tanks, standby power generation, and other mechanical systems supporting water and wastewater treatment processes. Candidates shall have experience working with different Industrial Water clients and be able to adapt to different project delivery methods, while providing technical leadership, quality oversight, and guidance to project teams.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Lead a team of mechanical engineers on system design for complex industrial water/wastewater projects. Responsible for the team’s execution relative to scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Direct and oversee the development of engineering deliverables including process and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), mechanical equipment layouts, piping isometrics, equipment data sheets, and technical specifications.
  • Provide technical guidance on engineering calculations to develop equipment and system performance parameters for the purpose of sizing equipment.
  • Ensure designs comply with company standards, client requirements, applicable codes, and industry best practices.
  • Review vendor and contractor submittals, calculations, shop drawings, and technical documentation for compliance with project requirements.
  • Lead and mentor junior and mid-level mechanical engineers by assigning tasks, teaching skills, providing technical coaching, and reviewing progress.
  • Act as the Responsible Engineer for various mechanical systems or equipment, including higher-risk or technically complex assignments.
  • Coordinate with other design disciplines and project stakeholders, including clients, project management, procurement, vendors, and construction representatives.
  • Understand the Industrial Water industry and be able to adapt to different delivery methods, while helping identify risks, resolve technical issues, and support successful project execution.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple assignments in a dynamic, fast-paced project environment.
  • Ensure compliance with company quality management procedures and project-specific QA/QC requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • 15 to 25+ years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Experience supporting equipment procurement activities, including vendor solicitation, bid evaluation, technical review, and equipment selection.
  • Strong experience designing, leading, and reviewing industrial water, wastewater, desalination, or treatment facility projects.
  • Preferred design experience specific to industrial water treatment for data centers.
  • Experience with the Front-End Loading (FEL) design process.
  • Experience leading a team in the development of detailed project drawings, technical specifications, piping isometrics, and equipment data sheets.
  • Experience with material selection and sizing of piping systems and equipment.
  • Understanding of hydraulic design principles, including pumping systems, pipe system hydraulics, and pressure loss calculations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams, providing discipline leadership, and mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong independent and critical thinking skills.
  • Autonomous and dependable with demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing or equivalent experience in Engineering work.
  • Minimum of 11 years related work experience.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
  • Holds an active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements for BV projects in applicable countries, and supports where necessary.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • This position would require working in a typical office environment. The position may also require physical tasks during site visits, including crouching, grasping, and standing/walking for extended periods of time.
  • Travel associated with project meetings, site visits, client engagements, and construction support activities is expected (typically up to 15%).

Final compensation is determined based on factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, internal alignment, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.
